Cashmere
Origin of excellence
Cashmere is a rare fiber obtained from the undercoat of cashmere goats raised in the cold, remote regions of Central and Western Asia, where extreme climate conditions favor the formation of particularly fine fibers. To protect themselves from extreme temperature fluctuations, these animals develop a double coat: a coarser outer layer and a soft, insulating inner layer.
True cashmere comes exclusively from this inner layer. Harvesting is done by hand-combing during the spring moult, not by shearing.
so as to preserve fibre quality and animal welfare.
Fiber quality and parameters
Quality depends directly on the area of origin. Central Asian cashmere typically has diameters between 17 and 19 microns and fiber lengths between 28 and 34 mm, with a good balance between softness and strength. Mongolian production
show measurable differences in regularity and hand. The finest levels are associated with the Alashan areas,
where the average diameters fall to around 15–15.8 microns and fall into the most valuable classes.
Fiber characteristics also vary depending on biological and environmental factors: individual animal, diet, health, altitude, climate, and seasonal fluctuations. Inner Mongolia is known for its particularly favorable conditions: dry climate, harsh winters, and suitable pastures, which contribute to the development of finer, more compact, and uniform fibers.
Fiber selection
Our selection favors fibers of Mongolian origin. Alashan cashmere comes from semi-desert areas that produce fine, durable undercoats, often in naturally light shades. Longer lengths improve the yarn's durability and reduce pilling, maintaining softness and luster.
Sustainability and supply chain
Cashmere production exceeds 350
millions of dollars annually and supports thousands of pastoral families, contributing to the continuity of local livestock farming practices. Albas breed protection programs preserve genetic quality and long-term production stability. Responsible production is supported by recognized certification schemes, including the Sustainable Fiber Alliance and The Good Cashmere Standard, with requirements for sustainability, animal welfare, ethical practices, and complete supply chain traceability.
